  • Use the photo above as reference as there’s not large English signage outside the shop.
  • They were polite, helpful and were patient, within reason, it’s a very busy place. apparently a Tim Ho Wan specialty.Īnd the hype is justified, everything was delicious, high quality ingredients, great balance of flavours.ĭespite everything I read about the staff being surly, my experience was anything but. I ordered the usual popular y um cha fare, har gao, siu mai, steamed vegetable dumplings, rice noodles and something another guest suggested, baked bbq pork bun. Tim Ho Wan is headed by chef Mak Pui Gor formerly a sous chef with the Four Seasons hotel working under Chef Chan Yan Tak, the first Chinese chef to be awarded three Michelin stars.īut Tim Ho Wan is after a totally different market to the Four Seasons crowd, the yum cha here is genuinely cheap, my selection ranged from HK$12 – HK$19 each, that’s actually cheaper than the relatively average yum cha place I went to recently. I came at 4pm to miss the crowd but there was still a 10 minute wait, sped up by the fact that I was one person and could share a table with an odd numbered group. And they come from all over the world, next to me were three Japanese girls, next to them a Spanish couple, and a few tables further an American couple. Open 10am-10pm, the queues start from the morning right through to the night. I didn’t try the pork buns as I’m not a pork bun guy but when I saw the people next to me order some I felt non-buyers remorse. The cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world has the crowds flocking.

The odd standout dish was the prawn and vegetable dumpling in a bean curd wrapper, they were crunchy, delicious and insanely moreish. The different offal dishes in rice noodle were my favourite by far but the prawn steamed dumpling and the prawn and pork dumpling were also incredible. It came out rapidly and I was blown away. Once inside I was handed a card and chose a substantial smorgasboard of Dim Sum. I claimed my place in the queue which moved very quickly. I walked the 20 or so minutes from where I was located and saw even at quarter to ten there was a queue nearly around the block.

I was fortunate to be in the area and saw that it opened at 10am, perfect for. I’ve read and heard a lot about Tim Ho Wan in my travels and was very keen to check out something with a michelin star in Hong Kong. But just because something is cheap doesn't mean it can be rubbish. I have ranked the value at 2 stars merely because you can't rate something that wasn't good. I tried to remove the filling but couldn't. They were uncooked and the raw batter was wrapped around what should and perhaps was a tasty filling. But the bun texture was nice and once you got your taste buds around the sweetness of the inner it was ok. I actually didn't like how sweet they were, sickly almost. The table next to us seemed to get better with having a table of food almost all the time. I guess our dishes were probably 1st, 5th and last. Next came the ginger cake - if you didn't order that you had to wait for the next dish to be cooked. Everyone having buns got them at the same time. It was almost as if the chef was cooking the menu in parts. The buns, then wait, the spring roll and then wait some more. With only 3 dishes I thought we may at least get them together, but no. There were only two of us but it took nearly 40 minutes from the first dish (bbq buns) to the last. the form was on our table but no pen, it was only when a pen was thrust our way we realised we needed to complete the form - we opted for the famed BBQ buns, fried dumplings with shrimp and curd been and shrimp spring roll. It was a lunchtime visit and the place was 75% full, no queues. Hotel staff advised us to try this when they saw us researching another similar establishment on our laptop.
